dc.description.abstract | The social problem of sexual violence encompasses the pervasive occurrence of non-consensual sexual acts and behaviors that cause physical, psychological, and emotional harm to individuals, perpetuating a cycle of trauma and societal distress. This study employs empowerment theory, structural functionalism, and systems theory to comprehend sexual violence's impact, emphasizing the necessity for effective support and trauma-informed interventions. Collaborative engagement with survivors and key stakeholders, alongside a comprehensive literature review, reveals a lack of transdisciplinary approaches, prompting innovative cross-disciplinary strategies. A scoping review of the literature surrounding current trauma-informed practices for investigations of sexual violence was conducted and also pointed to the need for an increase in trauma-informed practices, specifically utilizing a collaborative approach. This feedback was utilized in creating the Transdisciplinary Symposium: Trauma-Informed Support for Survivors of Sexual Violence. This social innovation aims to address survivors' complex needs through a collaborative approach guided by the Community Engagement and Social Innovation Model (CESI) and trauma-informed principles developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The symposium is introduced as a globally replicable social innovation with an evaluative component assessing pre- and post-data utilizing a mixed methods approach. From a pilot review conducted on April 1st, 2023, results indicated positive changes in participants' knowledge and a commitment to utilizing trauma-informed principles post-symposium. Recommendations underscore the significance of global partnerships and curriculum dissemination to amplify survivor support. Ultimately, this project advances trauma-informed and transdisciplinary approaches, enhancing support services and fostering compassionate responses to sexual violence survivors. | |
