Abstract

Social Innovation Rationale: This study addresses significant mental health disparities among BIPOC adolescents, focusing on systemic barriers, cultural stigmas, and resource disparities hindering access to mental health services. It emphasizes the need for culturally competent interventions, highlighting faith, spirituality, and music as vital resources for emotional healing and resilience. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, including a scoping review, community needs assessment, and the Harmony and Hope initiative's development. The literature review identifies effective school-based mental health interventions. The community needs assessment involves BIPOC families and stakeholders, uncovering service gaps and emphasizing trust-building and family engagement. Harmony and Hope integrates faith-based practices, music, and mental health education, featuring sessions on finding strength in faith and using music for emotional regulation. Results: The scoping review and community needs assessment revealed significant gaps in culturally responsive school-based mental health interventions for BIPOC adolescents. Findings highlighted the lack of culturally relevant services and the importance of integrating cultural practices. Harmony and Hope initiative increased mental health awareness, improved coping strategies, and enhanced community engagement. Evaluation methods included pre- and post-event surveys, showing positive changes in participants' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding mental health and cultural identity. Conclusion: Culturally tailored interventions like Harmony and Hope are essential in addressing mental health disparities among BIPOC adolescents. Integrating faith, music, and culturally relevant practices significantly enhances emotional healing and resilience. The Harmony and Hope initiative's success underscores the importance of developing sustainable, community- driven mental health programs, providing a model for future practice, research, and policy development.
