Factors that Contribute to Juvenile Delinquency

Abstract

There are a variety of factors contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. This study examined Los Angeles Risk and Resiliency Checkup (LARCC) to determine the frequency and percentage of protective and risk factors regarding delinquency, education, family, peers, and substance use and the individual. This study included 40 LARRC records from juveniles on probation at Los Angeles Probation South Central Gang Unit. Risk factors that contributed to juvenile delinquency ranged from absentee parents, significant crime in the neighborhood, gang affiliation, and drug and alcohol use. Protective factors that helped juveniles resist delinquent behavior ranged from a supportive community, positive interaction with teachers, family support, pro-social peer relations, and able to manage stress well. Results indicated no significant correlation between the number of prior arrests and the risk level for male offenders.
